Enzymes
Enzymes do the job inside our cells, making it possible to carry out chemical reactions in a very short time. They behave like catalysts that increase the speed of a reaction in the cell's environment, without taking any direct part in it. Enzymes are involved in virtually all processes - from breaking glucose chains to release energy, to building cell walls.
In cosmetics, enzymes are mainly used that affect peptide bonds between the cells of the outer layer of the epidermis, allowing active ingredients to penetrate deeper. These are the most common plant enzymes, such as papain from papaya or pineapple bromelain. Enzymes that occur naturally in the human body are also used. These include superoxide dismutase, which is extremely effective in neutralizing free radicals.
