Vitamin D

The name vitamin D covers all steroidal compounds with the biological activity of cholecalciferol - the most important of which are vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) and vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol). Approx. 20% of vitamin D3 comes from food, and about 80% from dermal synthesis as a product of changes in the 7-dehydrocholesterol contained in the skin, taking place under the influence of appropriate ultraviolet (UV-B) radiation.

Vitamin D has a positive effect on bone mineralization, strengthens them and makes them resistant to fractures. Increases strength and muscle mass. Strengthens immunity, among others by stimulating antibacterial protection, and also has an anti-inflammatory effect. It helps maintain healthy teeth and gums. Participates in the proper absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus. It is involved in the regulation of blood pressure and cell division. It stimulates the secretion of insulin, thanks to which it helps to maintain the proper concentration of glucose in the blood.

Vitamin D deficiency can cause the development of, among others. rickets, osteoporosis, heart failure, hypertension, depression, diabetes, obesity.

The cause of vitamin D deficiency is primarily reduced skin synthesis (related to latitude, aging processes, the use of sunscreen, lifestyle), as well as insufficient supply of vitamin D with food.

If you spend little time outdoors under a cloudless sky, are overweight or obese, eat few foods rich in vitamin D, have a dark complexion, or live in the northern hemisphere where the amount of sunlight reaching the earth is limited - you should think about vitamin D supplementation!
